A review of four decades of European integration
On 30 September 2026, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) will host a conference to analyse the impact of 40 years of Spain’s accession to the European Union (EU), a milestone that transformed the country’s economy, society and politics. The event is part of a broader programme, held between February and December 2026, featuring debates, seminars and round tables on current challenges in European communication, institutions and member states.
Participants and focus
The session will feature Cristina Gallach, a journalist specialising in international affairs and former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Joaquín Almunia, former Vice-President of the European Commission and former Minister of Economy and Finance. Almunia will deliver the opening lecture, titled «40 years building Europe», addressing the achievements and pending challenges of Spain’s integration into the European project. Journalist Rosa Brines will moderate the discussion.
Historical context
Spain’s accession to the then European Economic Community (EEC) in 1986—alongside Portugal—marked a turning point in the country’s recent history. Key changes include:
- The consolidation of democracy and modernisation of institutions.
- Access to European structural funds, which boosted infrastructure and regional development.
- Free movement of people, with programmes like Erasmus benefiting thousands of Spanish students.
- The adoption of the euro as a common currency in 2002.
This event is part of a multidisciplinary programme organised by UPV to reflect on how EU membership has shaped Spain’s political, economic and social reality, as well as future challenges in a globalised context.
