What’s being screened
«El espíritu de la colmena» (1973), directed by Víctor Erice, is one of the masterpieces of Spanish cinema. Set in rural post-war Spain, the film follows Ana, a six-year-old girl who, after watching Frankenstein at the cinema, becomes fascinated by the figure of the monster. The film explores themes such as childhood, fear, and imagination through a poetic and visually evocative narrative. Released during Franco’s dictatorship, it became a symbol of Spanish auteur cinema and a benchmark of 1970s European cinema.
Cycle programme
The screening is part of the «Dijous de pel·lícula» cycle at UPV, which for the 2026-2027 edition offers a reverse chronological journey through Spanish cinema. From Verano 1993 (Carla Simón, 2017) to Historias de la radio (José Luis Sáenz de Heredia, 1955), the cycle includes titles like La isla mínima, Viridiana, and Tigres de papel, aiming to provide a personal and critical look at the history of cinema made in Spain. The 17 December session is the penultimate before closing the year with La caza (Carlos Saura, 1966) and Viridiana (Luis Buñuel, 1961).
Access and requirements
The screening will take place at 6 PM in the Main Hall of the Rectorate (Building 3A) at UPV. Entry is free until full capacity, and the film will be shown in its original version with Spanish subtitles. The cycle is organised in collaboration with the Institut français de Valencia and coordinated by Javier Moral Martín and Paula Cardells Mosteiro.
