Levels
Yellow: be aware. Orange: be prepared. Red: take action and do not travel unless necessary.
Rain thresholds
In the Valencia region yellow starts at 20 l/m² in one hour, orange at 40 and red at 90 (in 12 hours: 60, 100 and 180). These are the highest thresholds in Spain, shared with almost all of the Balearic Islands and much of Catalonia; elsewhere red starts at 60.

What does each warning level mean: yellow, orange and red?

AEMET issues warnings by zone when it expects weather that may endanger people or cause damage. The colour depends on how far a threshold set for each zone is exceeded; in the Valencia region the rain thresholds are among the highest in Spain because rain here is torrential. The regional 112 service (Emergency Coordination Centre) then sets the alert level that triggers the protocols of the city council and transport operators.

Official meaning (AEMET) and Valencia City Council advice for rain and thunderstorms.

Yellow · be awareLow risk: moderate damage possible, especially in exposed areas. From 20 l/m² in one hour or 60 in 12 hours.Plan journeys along main roads, stay away from riverbeds and bridges and never drive through standing water or ravines.
Orange · be preparedSignificant risk: serious damage possible. From 40 l/m² in one hour or 100 in 12 hours. Parks, gardens and cemeteries close and outdoor events are suspended.Avoid non-essential travel, stay somewhere safe, keep away from flood-prone areas and avoid basements and garages.

What changes in the city with an orange or red alert?

This is what happened in recent episodes (September and October 2026), according to the protocols of the city council, the regional government and the operators. Every episode is different: the final decision is theirs and is announced on their official channels, linked below.

  • Metro and tram (Metrovalencia): under a red alert the service drops to roughly a Saturday timetable and may be suspended on affected stretches; under orange they warn of possible disruption.
  • Cercanías trains (Renfe): under a red alert all lines of the Valencia network (C1, C2, C3 and C6) have been suspended, with free ticket changes and refunds.
  • EMT buses: keep running except on flooded streets; diversions and cancellations appear on our transport alerts page.
  • Parks, gardens and the Turia Gardens: under an orange or red alert the city council closes them, together with the libraries inside them and the cemeteries.
  • Schools: under orange, classes are suspended in schools in flood-prone areas and the districts hit by the 2024 flash flood; under red, across the whole city.
  • Beaches: under a red alert access to the sand is banned; local police patrol the access points.
  • Street markets, festivals and outdoor events: under orange, outdoor events are suspended; under red, all public events (the Fallas protocol says the same).
  • Museums and venues: under a red alert municipal museums, libraries, cultural centres and sports facilities close. On 1 October 2026 CaixaForum (14:00), the Science Museum and the Hemisfèric (15:00), Les Arts (16:00) and Bioparc (17:00) also closed early; check their website before going.
  • Tourism: tourist offices close, guided tours and activities in the Devesa and the Albufera are cancelled, and the sightseeing buses bring their last departure forward.
  • Roads and ravines: flood-prone crossings and ravine access are closed; never cross them even if the water looks shallow.

Our transport alerts page lists EMT and Cercanías disruptions as soon as they are published; the transport map shows real arrivals minute by minute.

What is an ES-Alert and what should I do if I get one?

ES-Alert is Civil Protection's mobile alert system: the regional government sends it to every phone in the affected area, with nothing to install and a loud tone even if the phone is on silent. During the red alert of 1 October 2026, three were sent to Castellón and Valencia.

The message sums up the essentials: avoid travel, stay away from riverbeds and ravines, respect road closures and, if the water level rises, move to upper floors. If you receive one as a visitor, do what residents do: stay at your accommodation or somewhere safe, do not go down to garages and follow the official channels (112 Comunitat Valenciana and AEMET) until the alert is lifted.

What to do in Valencia when it rains?

With a yellow warning or an ordinary rainy day the city carries on and there is plenty to do indoors. With orange or red, the sensible thing is to stay near your accommodation and move the plan to another day; under red, municipal museums and many venues also close.

  • Oceanogràfic and the Science Museum, in the City of Arts and Sciences: reachable by metro or bus, and enough for a whole day.
  • City-centre museums: the Fine Arts Museum is free, and the IVAM, the MuVIM and the Ceramics Museum (González Martí) are a few minutes' walk from each other.
  • Central Market and Colón Market: covered, with bars and horchata shops to wait for the rain to pass (the Central Market opens Monday to Saturday, 7:30 to 15:00).
  • La Lonja (the Silk Exchange) and the Cathedral with the Miguelete tower: two indoor visits five minutes' walk apart.
  • Cinema: our listings gather Valencia's cinemas with today's showtimes.
  • What's on: filter today's indoor plans (theatre, concerts, exhibitions) in our events agenda.

Where to check the official warnings in real time?

  • AEMET: the warnings page and the official app, which sends notifications by municipality.
  • 112 Comunitat Valenciana: declares the regional alerts and publishes advice for the public.
  • Valencia City Council: advice for the public by level and phenomenon (rain, storms, wind, heat).
  • Metrovalencia, EMT and Renfe: service status on their websites and social media; EMT and Cercanías disruptions also on our alerts page.

Frequently asked questions

What does a red alert mean in Valencia?

It is AEMET's highest warning level: extraordinary danger, with very serious or catastrophic damage possible. In the Valencia region it starts at 90 l/m² in one hour or 180 in 12 hours. The regional 112 service then sets a red alert: classes and public events are suspended, parks, museums, libraries and municipal facilities close and public transport is reduced or stopped. Avoid any journey that is not essential.

Does the Valencia metro run during a red alert?

It depends on the episode. During the red alert of 1 October 2026 Metrovalencia cut the service to roughly a Saturday timetable and asked people not to travel; Renfe suspended all Cercanías lines. Check the status on Metrovalencia's channels and on our transport alerts page.

Are the Fallas cancelled if there is a rain alert?

The protocol of the city council and the Fallas central board suspends outdoor events under an orange rain alert and all public events under a red alert. The mascletàs and the cremà depend on each day's decision; under yellow they go ahead with precautions.

What is the difference between an AEMET warning and a regional alert?

AEMET issues the weather warning (the forecast of the phenomenon and its level). The regional government, through its Emergency Coordination Centre (112), declares the Civil Protection alert that triggers the protocols of councils and operators, almost always with the same colour as AEMET's warning.

When does it rain most in Valencia?

In September and October, when the torrential rain episodes (gota fría or dana) are concentrated. The rest of the year it rains little: about 460 mm a year over 44 rainy days. The month-by-month climate is on the page about when to visit.

How often is the data on this page updated?

We check AEMET every 10 minutes: the page is rebuilt as soon as a warning is issued or changed, and also when a warning starts or ends. AEMET reviews its warnings early morning, mid-morning, late afternoon and at 23:50, plus whenever the forecast changes. The issue time is shown next to each block.
