Metro or tram: what's the difference

Metrovalencia has two modes. Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are metro: higher-capacity trains that run underground through the centre and at surface level outside the city. Lines 4, 6, 8 and 10 are trams: mostly street level, with stops closer together. There is no third category — talk of a "surface metro" describes an open-air stretch of a metro line, not a separate mode.

The 10 lines

Each line has its own colour on the official signage, the same one you'll see on the map.

• L1 (yellow): Bétera – Villanueva de Castellón, the longest line.
• L2 (magenta): Llíria – Torrent Avinguda.
• L3 (red): Rafelbunyol – Aeroport, the airport line.
• L4 (blue): tram between Mas del Rosari and Doctor Lluch.
• L5 (green): Marítim – Aeroport.
• L6 (purple): tram between Tossal del Rei and Marítim.
• L7 (orange): Torrent Avinguda – Marítim.
• L8 (light blue): tram between Marítim and Neptú.
• L9 (brown): Riba-roja de Túria – Alboraia Peris Aragó.
• L10 (light green): tram between Alacant and Natzaret.

Zones and ticket prices

The network splits into two fare zones, A and B, and the airport adds its own surcharge. That leaves four possible combinations: A, B, AB and AB+. What you pay depends on which one your trip falls into, so you can work it out between two specific stations below instead of hunting through a table.
