A Carmen far from clichés
Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía presents a new production of Carmen, the opera by Georges Bizet based on Prosper Mérimée’s novel. Directed by Ted Huffman, a stage director redefining contemporary opera, this version moves away from traditional picturesqueness to explore the tension between social order and individual freedom. Huffman, currently general director of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, proposes a staging where the set comes to life: scene and costume changes happen in front of the audience, creating an immersive experience.
Stellar cast
Mezzosoprano Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, considered one of the best Carmens today after her performances at Covent Garden and the Vienna State Opera, makes her Valencia debut in this role. She is joined by tenor Charles Castronovo as Don José, soprano Ruth Iniesta as Micaëla, and baritone Davide Luciano as Escamillo.
This production will be performed in six shows starting on 2 October 2026. Tickets are available from €10 on the Les Arts website.
