What’s being performed
«Cantando bajo las balas» is a first-person theatrical satire portraying General Millán Astray, founder of the Spanish Legion, through his own words and songs. Written by Antonio Álamo and directed by Asier Andueza, the play blends black humour and historical critique to depict a megalomaniac, narcissistic, and bellicose military figure obsessed with "saving the fatherland" from his enemies: reds, separatists, and intellectuals. The text revisits his most controversial phrases—such as "¡Viva la muerte!" or "¡Muerte a la inteligencia!"—and takes them to the extreme to expose his contradiction: a self-proclaimed hero who, in his infamous 1936 confrontation with Unamuno, was left exposed.
Who’s performing
Actress Ane Gabarain—winner of a Goya for 80 egunean (2010) and nominated for an International Emmy for Patria (2020)—brings Millán Astray to life in a monologue that oscillates between the grotesque and the pathetic. Gabarain, known for her versatility in theatre (La casa de Bernarda Alba, El método Grönholm) and television (Goenkale, El Ministerio del Tiempo), takes on the challenge of humanising—and ridiculing—a historical figure without resorting to easy caricature. The play further cements her reputation as one of the most accomplished performers in the Spanish theatrical scene.
