What this conference is about
«Javier Goerlich. Architecture and Urbanism in Valencia (1914-1962)» is a conference scheduled at the Museu Ceràmica on 26 November 2026, part of the activities organised by the National Ceramics Museum in collaboration with its friends’ association. The event spans nearly five decades of the architect’s work, from the start of his professional career until 1962.
Who was Javier Goerlich
Javier Goerlich Lleó was born in Valencia in 1886 and graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture in 1913, according to the museum’s published information. He served as Valencia’s chief architect from 1931 to 1956, as noted by the Valencia History Museum, and designed some of the city’s most recognisable avenues, squares, and buildings.
His legacy was also the focus of an exhibition with the same title, featured in the Open House Valencia 2026 programme at the Centre Cívic Aiora, located in the square named after him. The Goerlich Foundation contributed to guided tours of that exhibition. The Museu Ceràmica conference offers an opportunity to explore this same legacy in a talk format.
Who it’s for
This conference on Goerlich will appeal to those interested in understanding how much of Valencia’s urban centre took shape during the first half of the 20th century: architecture students and professionals, local history enthusiasts, and residents curious about the origins of the streets and buildings they encounter daily.
