What is «Escriptures cactus» and what does this session offer
The cycle «Escriptures cactus. Literary Attempts on Julio González» is an IVAM initiative to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Valencian sculptor Julio González (1876–1942). Nine contemporary writers—including Alicia Kopf, María Negroni, Andrés Neuman, and Agustín Fernández Mallo—have created literary works that reinterpret his legacy from modern perspectives, blurring the boundaries between art and literature. The monthly sessions, free and open to the public, combine talks with the publication of texts in Escriptures Cactus, a book available at the museum’s shop.
In this final event, Alicia Kopf—author of Brother in Ice (Documenta Prize 2016)—will share her creative process and the keys to her approach to González’s work, in conversation with moderator Berta Ferrer. The discussion will take place in the IVAM’s exhibition hall, integrating literary reflection with the physical space where the sculptor’s works are displayed.
Who is participating and what Alicia Kopf brings to the table
Alicia Kopf (Girona, 1982) is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Catalan literature. Her work, known for blending genres—from autofiction to visual essays—engages with art from a critical and personal standpoint. In this session, according to IVAM, she will explore how González’s sculpture, pioneering in its use of iron and abstraction, has influenced her writing, as well as the challenges of translating the visual into the literary.
The moderator, Berta Ferrer, is the cycle’s coordinator and has guided each author through their respective sessions, fostering debate between the audience and guests.
