Monopolies digital and global crises in perspective

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) concludes the fifth edition of Encuentros Mundos por Venir with a session focused on the challenges of digital dependency and its impact on the world order. On 31 October 2026 at 11:00 AM, the Auditorium of the Facultat de Belles Arts will bring together two key figures in this debate: Argentine economist Cecilia Rikap and Chilean-Spanish jurist Valeska David.

Rikap, author of Teoría de la dependencia digital (2026), will address how companies like Microsoft, Amazon or Google have established intellectual monopolies that subordinate universities, start-ups, and public bodies to their interests. Her presentation will detail the legal, political, and economic mechanisms that allow these corporations to control the pace of innovation and appropriate globally generated knowledge.

David, currently linked to the World Bank, will analyse contemporary geopolitical crises and their effect on democracies, international law, and human rights. Her intervention will propose ways to rethink global law from perspectives such as intersectionality and environmental sustainability, illustrating with concrete cases how these principles can challenge the status quo.

A cycle of contemporary thought

This conference is part of the V Encuentros Mundos por Venir, a programme that since 24 September 2026 has explored tools for understanding the present. Among previous speakers are Asunción Molinos Gordo and Yayo Herrero, with approaches ranging from political ecology to cultural critique.
