A reflection on voice and silence
Artist Joan Morey (Mallorca, 1972) presents his project ANTONIO, JESÚS, MAGDALENA, MARÍA, NICOLÁS, TERESA (audiovisual essay for an absent voice) in the Sala Contrafuertes at the Centre del Carme. This multichannel video installation, winner of the 1st National Video Art Call LA MULTIKANAL, explores the connection between Baroque religious imagery and contemporary forms of communication. Through six names—Antonio, Jesús, Magdalena, María, Nicolás, and Teresa—Morey crafts a narrative where silence takes centre stage, questioning how the sacred and the media intersect in today’s culture.
Curated by Makma (Magazine of Visual Arts and Contemporary Culture), the work is set within a historic space: the 13th-century former convent that houses the Centre del Carme. The installation uses synchronised projections to create an immersive experience, inviting viewers to reflect on the power of images and the absence of voice as an expressive tool.
Context and organisation
ANTONIO, JESÚS, MAGDALENA, MARÍA, NICOLÁS, TERESA is the result of an initiative led by Makma and the APACC cultural association, in collaboration with the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana. The project stems from LA MULTIKANAL, a unique competition in Spain dedicated exclusively to video art, aiming to promote the discipline within the national artistic landscape.
The exhibition is part of the Centre del Carme’s programme, a space that blends historical heritage with contemporary proposals. The Sala Contrafuertes, where the work is displayed, is an emblematic venue within the complex, known for hosting innovative projects.
