Valencia's beaches: which they are and how to get to each one

Valencia has city beaches 20 minutes from the centre by tram: Les Arenes, El Cabanyal and Malvarrosa, with a promenade and rice restaurants. To the north lies the quieter Patacona, and to the south, past the port, Pinedo and the dune beaches of El Saler and La Devesa, inside the Albufera Natural Park. The water is above 22 °C from June to October.

City beaches: Les Arenes, El Cabanyal and Malvarrosa

Together they form a single strip of sand north of the port, with a promenade, restaurants and full facilities. Les Arenes and El Cabanyal are closest to the Marina; Malvarrosa stretches north to the boundary with Alboraia.

They're the busiest in summer, especially on weekend afternoons. They have lifeguards in season, showers, play areas and adapted bathing points.

How do I get to the beach from Valencia city centre?

The tram is the easiest: lines 4 and 6 stop right by the sand and line 8 reaches Neptú, next to the port. Several EMT bus lines also go there.

With a zone A SUMA card, the tram and bus to the city beaches cost the same as any other urban journey.

Patacona: the quiet beach to the north

Just north of Malvarrosa, already in the municipality of Alboraia, Patacona is wider and a little less crowded, with a quieter promenade and horchata bars nearby. You can walk there from the end of Malvarrosa or take EMT line 31.

Pinedo, El Saler and La Devesa: natural beaches to the south

South of the port, Pinedo is the first beach, more local and with beach bars. From there the Albufera Natural Park begins: the beaches of El Saler, La Garrofera and La Devesa have dunes, pine woods and a far more natural feel, with no buildings on the seafront.

EMT lines 24 and 25 run there from the centre (Porta de la Mar): line 24 passes Pinedo beach and El Saler and continues to El Palmar; line 25 goes via El Saler to La Devesa and El Perellonet. In summer, go early: parking is limited and the bus is full at weekends.

La Devesa del Saler is a protected area: use the marked boardwalks so as not to damage the dunes.

Tips for going to the beach in Valencia

  • Check the flag before swimming: green, go ahead; yellow, take care; red, no swimming.
  • The sun is strongest between noon and 5 pm: parasol, sunscreen and water.
  • Don't leave valuables unattended on the sand.
  • In the summer season there are lifeguards and assisted bathing points for people with reduced mobility on several city beaches.
  • On the night of Sant Joan (23 June), the city beaches fill with bonfires and people until the early hours.

It depends on the plan. For an easy trip from the centre and a rice lunch, Malvarrosa or Les Arenes, 20 minutes by tram. For something quieter, Patacona. And for a natural beach with dunes and pine woods, El Saler or La Devesa, in the Albufera Natural Park.

How do I get to Malvarrosa beach?

By tram, on lines 4 or 6 to the Platja Malva-rosa stop, or on EMT buses 19, 31, 92 or 99. From the centre it takes about 20–25 minutes. With a zone A SUMA 10, the trip costs the same as any urban journey.

When can you swim in Valencia?

The water is above 22 °C from June to October, peaking at around 27 °C in August. In May and November it's around 19 °C, cool but bearable for the brave. From December to April it's below 16 °C.

Are there nudist beaches in Valencia?

Nudism is traditionally practised in areas of the natural beaches to the south, around La Devesa and El Saler. On the city beaches, swimwear is the norm. Respect each beach's signage.
