What to expect at the concert
The Tommy Smith & Carl Winther Trio delivers a 90-minute set of contemporary jazz as part of the XV International Contemporary Jazz Festival. According to Jimmy Glass’s programme, the repertoire explores original compositions and jazz standards, blending influences from free jazz pioneers like Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp with a more eclectic style, reflecting Smith’s career. The trio—tenor saxophone, piano, and double bass—performs uninterrupted pieces, emphasising improvisation and musical interaction.
Who’s performing
The concert is led by Tommy Smith, a Scottish saxophonist with over 30 solo albums and collaborations with artists such as John Scofield, Kenny Barron, and Joe Lovano. Smith, who recorded for Blue Note in the 1990s, shares the stage with Danish pianist Carl Winther and double bassist Run Fog-Nielsen, both prominent figures in Europe’s jazz scene.
