What’s being performed
The concert "Contrabajo: tradición y modernidad" presents a chamber music programme focused on the double bass, featuring four works by composers from different eras. The repertoire includes Quartet No. 2 in D major by Franz A. Hoffmeister (Classicism), Prelude and Fugue by Heinz Holliger (a contemporary piece dedicated to Edicson Ruiz), Serenata in vano by Carl Nielsen (for wind and string quintet), and Quintet Op. 39 by Sergei Prokofiev (20th century). According to Palau de la Música, the programme explores the evolution of the double bass as a solo instrument, from the 18th century to modern music.
Who’s performing
Double bassist Edicson Ruiz, the guest soloist, performs the works alongside Solistas de la Orquesta de València, a group formed by musicians from the Orquesta de València. Ruiz, internationally renowned, is the highlight of the evening, with a piece composed especially for him (Prelude and Fugue by Holliger). The concert is part of the Cambra al Palau (25th edition) cycle, which in the 2026/2027 season includes 37 chamber concerts in Sala Rodrigo.
