A Baroque masterpiece in Valencia
On 23 March 2027, the Palau de la Música in Valencia will present one of the most iconic works of classical music: St Matthew Passion, BWV 244, composed by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1727 and 1729. This piece, regarded as one of the crowning achievements of Baroque music, narrates the passion and death of Christ through choruses, arias, and recitatives, with an emotional and technical depth that has kept it relevant for three centuries.
The performance
The version to be performed in Valencia will be led by Cappella Mediterranea, an ensemble specialising in Baroque and classical music, under the direction of maestro Leonardo García Alarcón. Joining them will be the Escolanía de la Virgen de los Desamparados, a children’s choir that will add a unique dimension to this interpretation. The combination of adult and children’s voices, alongside the orchestra, is one of the defining features of this work, which Bach originally conceived for performance at the St Thomas Church in Leipzig.
