Concert Programme
The Orquestra de València, conducted by Christian Vásquez, will perform on 9 April 2027 at 19:30 in the Sala Iturbi at the Palau de la Música de València, presenting a programme that blends classical and contemporary works. The centrepiece will be Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93, composed in 1953 and regarded as one of the pinnacles of 20th-century symphonic music.
The programme also includes two less frequently performed works in European venues:
- Concierto de otoño, for trumpet and orchestra, by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, written in 2021 for trumpeter Pacho Flores, who will perform as soloist.
- Crónicas latinoamericanas, by Argentine composer Daniel Freiberg, a symphonic suite evoking the rhythms and landscapes of Latin America.
Alongside Flores, the concert will feature Javier Eguillor (drums), Eduard Marquina-Selfa (piano), and Mario Capodicasa (double bass), musicians who will add rhythmic depth to Márquez’s and Freiberg’s compositions.
Context of the Works
Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is a work of profound dramatic intensity, written during a period of political repression in the USSR. Its four-movement structure reflects both the oppression of the Stalinist regime and a search for hope. Meanwhile, the works by Márquez and Freiberg represent a commitment to cultural diversity, incorporating Latin American sounds into the symphonic repertoire.
