The Edificio Rialto will host the screening of Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (The Adventures of Prince Achmed) in October 2026, directed in 1926 by Lotte Reiniger. This is the first surviving animated feature film, created using a silhouette technique with cardboard and lead cut-outs.
What’s being screened
Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed is a loose adaptation of several tales from One Thousand and One Nights. The story follows a prince who, after obtaining a flying horse, battles witches, demons, and sorcerers. The film lasts 65 minutes and will be shown in two sessions:
- 24 October 2026 at 20:15.
- 25 October 2026 at 18:00.
Technique and production
Lotte Reiniger developed a silhouette animation technique for this film, using hand-cut figures articulated with threads or wires and filmed frame by frame. The hand-painted backgrounds enhance the visual aesthetic of the work. The production took three years and involved a small team, including her husband, Carl Koch, and animators Berthold Bartosch and Alexander Kardan.
