Who was Lucía Joyce
«Lucía Joyce» is a theatre-dance piece that portrays the life of Lucía Joyce, dancer and key figure in the 20th-century artistic avant-garde. Daughter of writer James Joyce, she collaborated with artists such as Fernand Léger and Man Ray on Ballet Mécanique, was a contemporary of modern dance, and a patient of psychoanalyst Carl Jung. The play, written by Itziar Pascual and directed by Cristina D. Silveira, explores her struggle to be recognised as an artist beyond the role of muse or daughter of a genius.
What is performed
The Karlik Danza Teatro production blends theatre and contemporary dance to recreate Lucía Joyce’s memories at the age of 75, institutionalised at St. Andrew Hospital in Northampton (UK). Through choreographic movements and dialogues, the piece addresses her relationship with her father, her passion for dance, and her connection with Samuel Beckett. According to Sala Russafa, it is an intimate portrait of a woman whose life was overshadowed by the legacy of a literary genius.
Who performs
The production features three performers: Memé Tabares, Jorge Barrantes, and Carla González, under the direction of Cristina D. Silveira. Karlik Danza Teatro, an Extremaduran company based in Cáceres, is responsible for the production, specialising in shows that fuse theatre, dance, and performance.
