What is Escriptures cactus
Escriptures cactus is a monthly talk series organised by the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Julio González (1876–1942), one of the most influential Valencian sculptors of the 20th century. The project invites nine contemporary writers to explore González’s work through literary forms such as short stories, chronicles, or poetry, complementing academic perspectives with hybrid and contemporary proposals. The authors’ reflections are compiled in the publication Escrituras Cactus, available at the museum’s shop.
Who is Manel Baixauli and what will he do in the session
Manel Baixauli (Sueca, 1963) is a writer and painter, author of works like Càlida nit (Ciutat de Barcelona Prize 2004) and La cinquena planta (Critics’ Prize of Valencian Writers 2016). His literary work is characterised by an introspective style and a deep connection with visual art, making him one of the standout participants in this cycle.
In this seventh session of the project, Baixauli will share his creative process and his approach to his work centred on Julio González. The talk, moderated by architect and writer Berta Ferrer, will take place in the IVAM’s exhibition hall and will allow the audience to engage in a dialogue on how literature can reinterpret sculpture and the legacy of one of the great names in modern art.
Timing and access
The session will begin at 19:00 and will last approximately 90 minutes, including a Q&A with the audience. Entry is free and does not require prior booking, though seating is limited. Access will be on a first-come, first-served basis until the room’s capacity is reached.
Context of the cycle
The Escriptures cactus project is curated by writer and critic Jorge Carrión, who has selected authors such as Sara Barquinero, Agustín Fernández Mallo, Alicia Kopf, and Andrés Neuman to participate in this dialogue between literature and contemporary art. Each session delves into a different perspective on Julio González’s work, from narrative to poetic approaches, aiming to bring the public closer to the sculptor’s figure through innovative and personal viewpoints.
