What’s being screened
«Ex Machina» (2014), directed by Alex Garland, is the second film in the «Creadors i Criatures» cycle at the Museu de Belles Arts de València. The movie explores the relationship between a programmer and Ava, an android with artificial intelligence, in a psychological thriller that questions the ethics of artificial creation. With a runtime of 108 minutes, the film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2016 and is a benchmark in contemporary science fiction.
Programme and context
The cycle, running from October to November 2026, examines the figure of the creator and their creations in cinema through seven films. Each session includes an introduction and debate led by Professor Teresa Sorolla (Universitat de València), contextualising the theme from classical mythology to modern science fiction. «Ex Machina» represents the conflict between the creator’s control and the autonomy of the creation, a recurring motif in the cycle.
Timing and access
The screening will take place on 20 October 2026 at 17:00 in the museum’s Saló d’Actes. Entry is free and no prior booking is required, though seating is limited. The cycle is aimed at adults interested in cinema, philosophy, and technology, as well as students and professionals in the field.
