Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in Valencia
On 17 December 2026, Sala Iturbi at Palau de la Música in Valencia will host a performance of cantatas 1 to 4 of the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) by Johann Sebastian Bach. Composed in 1734, this work is one of the pinnacles of Baroque music, narrating the biblical story of Jesus’ birth through choruses, arias, and recitatives. The concert will be performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, an ensemble specialising in historically informed performances of early music, under the direction of Ton Koopman, renowned for his complete recording of Bach’s cantatas.
Soloists and Programme
The soloists include soprano Elisabeth Breuer, countertenor Maarten Engeltjes, tenor Tilman Lichdi, and baritone Klaus Mertens, the latter a frequent collaborator with the ensemble. The programme focuses on the first four cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio, featuring some of the work’s most iconic passages, such as the opening chorus «Jauchzet, frohlocket» and the aria «Bereite dich, Zion».
