Who was Ramón Simarro Oltra
Ramón Simarro Oltra (Novetlè, 1819–Xàtiva, 1855) was a Valencian painter whose artistic career was prematurely interrupted by tuberculosis. Trained in Valencia, Alicante and Barcelona, he completed his apprenticeship in Rome, where he associated with artists of his time, such as Luis de Madrazo and Kuntz. On his return, his work reflected the influence of classical and contemporary masters, although his legacy was overshadowed by his early death. His son, the scientist Luis Simarro, later became a key figure in the history of Spanish science.
What will be presented at the talk
Dr. Antonio López Alemany, after more than a decade of research, presents a comprehensive biography and detailed study of Simarro Oltra's work. The event includes the first complete catalogue of his artistic output, which amounts to nearly 700 pieces, including oils, watercolours, washes and drawings. Some of these works have been rediscovered in galleries in Madrid and Vienna, allowing his career to be reconstructed and placed in the context of 19th-century Valencian art.
The talk, led by art consultant Amparela Benlliure, will explore both the artist's personal life and his historical and artistic context. The event will be streamed live on Cañada Blanch's YouTube channel.
