What the lecture covers
The lecture «El perfum en la història i en l’art» examines the role of perfume throughout history and its relationship with art. From its origins in spiritual rituals—where aromatic smoke symbolised a connection to the divine—to its evolution as an element of personal care and cultural expression, perfume has been a vehicle for emotions and memories. The talk will delve into how civilisations such as the Egyptian and Mesopotamian used aromatic substances in religious ceremonies, funerary rituals, and daily practices, laying the foundations of modern perfumery.
Historical and artistic context
The term perfume comes from the Latin per fumum ("through smoke"), a direct reference to its use in offerings and rituals. The lecture will explore how this symbolism has transcended in art, from representations in ceramics and painting to its presence in literature and popular culture. It will also address the materials and techniques used in antiquity to create fragrances, as well as their influence on sumptuary art, such as that housed in the Museu de la Ceràmica itself.
Access and requirements
The lecture is free to attend and requires no prior registration. It will take place on 14 October 2026 at the Museu de la Ceràmica in Valencia. No capacity limit or minimum age is specified for attendance.
