An animated film about friendship and growth
On 14 September at 19:30, Cines Lys will host the screening of The Boy and the Beast (Bakemono no ko, 2015), directed by Mamoru Hosoda, as part of the Anime Saikuru cycle. Tickets cost €9, and the film lasts 119 minutes. According to the cinema’s classification, it is not recommended for children under 7.
The story follows Kyuta, an orphaned boy living on the streets of Tokyo, and Kumatetsu, a supernatural creature from a parallel world. When Kyuta accidentally crosses the boundary between the two worlds, they form a bond that leads to adventures full of action and emotion. Produced by Studio Chizu, the film stands out for its detailed animation and narrative, exploring themes such as loneliness, personal growth, and the importance of emotional bonds.
The director and his work
Mamoru Hosoda, one of Japan’s most acclaimed animation directors, will turn 59 on 19 September. Known for films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Wolf Children (2012), and Mirai (2018)—nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—Hosoda has developed a unique style that blends fantasy and reality with an intimate approach. The Boy and the Beast was a hit in Japan, grossing over 5 billion yen and winning the Japan Academy Prize for Best Animation in 2016.
This screening is part of the Anime Saikuru cycle, celebrating Hosoda’s work at Cines Lys. In addition to the 14 September session, there will be a second chance to see the film on 28 September at the same time, as per the official cycle schedule.
