A documentary on the invisible legacy of women
Ellas en la ciudad, the documentary by architect and urbanist Reyes Gallegos, will be screened on 5 December 2026 at La Rambleta as part of the Festes Populars del barri de Sant Marcel·lí. The film, produced by Rafael Cobos, recovers the voices of women who populated the peripheral neighbourhoods of Seville in the 1970s and, through their daily struggles, laid the foundations for today’s social services and urban planning.
Through the testimonies of these women in three Sevillian neighbourhoods, the documentary addresses themes such as gender, care, urbanism, education, and political struggles. Their stories, recognised as cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, offer a unique perspective on how cities have transformed over the last five decades. The work has been awarded 8 nominations for the 2026 Goya Awards and the 2026 FAAVV Prize, granted by the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations of Valencia, for its contribution to gender equality.
A screening with context
The session on 5 December will feature an introduction by Sara Sánchez Serena, who will contextualise the documentary’s importance within the neighbourhood’s festivities. With a runtime of 70 minutes and suitable for all audiences, the screening is an opportunity to reflect on the fundamental role of women in shaping cities.
The documentary, also available on Movistar Plus+, has been highlighted as an educational tool to combat gender stereotypes and raise awareness of neighbourhood activism from a female perspective.
