A centuries-old tradition on the waters of L'Albufera
The Pilgrimage of the Most Holy Christ of Health is one of the most emblematic celebrations of El Palmar, a small village of around 700 inhabitants located in the heart of the L'Albufera Natural Park. Every 4 August, at sunset, the image of the Christ travels across the waters of the Royal Lake of L'Albufera in a maritime procession that blends devotion, tradition, and landscape. The festival, which attracts locals and visitors from across the region, is a tribute to local culture and the ancestral bond between the village and its natural surroundings.
The route and main events
The pilgrimage begins with the preparation of the Christ’s image, which is adorned with flowers and placed on a decorated boat. Accompanied by five vessels provided by the Valencia City Council, the procession sails across the lake while worshippers, dressed in traditional attire, sing hymns and prayers. The highlight comes when the image reaches the shore, where a flower offering takes place and blessings are given to those in attendance.
The celebration extends beyond the religious sphere: throughout the afternoon, the village comes alive with traditional music, food stalls, and activities for all ages. It’s a unique opportunity to experience Valencian culture in an unparalleled setting, where water, sky, and land merge in a spectacle of light and colour.
Participation and logistics
The pilgrimage is a free and open event for all, though arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot to follow the procession. The municipal boats ensure safety and access for worshippers along the route, but spaces are limited. No registration is required to attend, but those wishing to take an active part in the procession can join the preliminary events held at El Palmar’s church.
To make the most of the experience, comfortable footwear, sun protection, and water are advised, especially in the hours leading up to sunset, when temperatures can be high.
