The novel that broke the silence
El Acontecimiento, a work by French writer Annie Ernaux—Nobel Prize in Literature 2022—comes to Valencia in a theatrical format brought by the company Cie L’Éveil. Based on Ernaux’s autobiographical experience, the play recounts the ordeal of a university student in 1963 France who, upon discovering an unwanted pregnancy, faces a legal and medical system that criminalises abortion. With no safe options or support, the protagonist is forced to resort to clandestine methods, exposing herself to physical and emotional risks. Written in 2000, the work became a key testimony in shedding light on a reality lived in the shadows by millions of women.
From book to stage
The theatrical adaptation, directed by the French company Cie L’Éveil, brings the rawness and intimacy of the original story to the stage. With a minimalist approach, the production prioritises the honesty of the dialogue and the physical tension of the actors, avoiding sensationalism. The play is performed in French with Spanish subtitles and is recommended for audiences over 16 due to its themes.
