A contemporary look at Valencian sculpture
The Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània hosts 34 Illustrious by 34 Illustrators, an exhibition that fosters a dialogue between Valencian sculpture and contemporary illustration. Organised by the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, the show brings together 34 key sculptors—from the late 19th century to today—and 34 illustrators who reinterpret their work using modern techniques and styles.
Among the sculptors featured are Helena Sorolla, Andreu Alfaro, Enric Mestre, Ángeles Marco, and Joan Cardells, figures who marked milestones in the evolution of sculpture in the region. Each is reinterpreted by an illustrator, such as María Herreros, César Sebastián, Carla Fuentes, or Txemacantropus, creating a bridge between sculptural tradition and new visual narratives.
Structure and theme of the exhibition
The exhibition takes place in the Sala Contrafuertes at the Centre del Carme and is structured around 34 illustrated pieces, each dedicated to a sculptor. The project reflects on the tension between the persistence of academic models—such as figuration, religious imagery, or public monuments—and the shift toward new ways of understanding space and material.
The show not only pays tribute to the sculptors but also highlights the role of illustration as a tool for reinterpretation and memory. Through this proposal, visitors are invited to explore how art can engage with its past without losing relevance.

The exhibition is open to the public from 9 July to 13 September 2026 at the Centre del Carme. Admission is free.
