The relevance of Miguel Hernández in the 21st century
On 15 September 2026, the Aula Magna at Centre Cultural La Nau (Universitat de València) will host the conference «Buscant un Miguel Hernández per al segle XXI», a reflection on the contemporary significance of the work and legacy of the poet from Orihuela. The event, scheduled from 19:00 to 20:30, will be delivered by Professor Rafael Alarcón Sierra, Chair of Spanish Literature at the University of Jaén and a renowned expert on Hernández’s life and work.
Organised by the Aula de Poesia and Servei de Cultura Universitària UV-Cultura, the session is part of a broader programme exploring Miguel Hernández’s influence on contemporary literature. Alarcón, editor of works such as «Llamo a los poetas». Miguel Hernández, 80 años después (1942-2022) and author of studies on the poet’s relationship with the Generation of ’27, will examine how Hernández’s poetry—shaped by social commitment, suffering, and hope—resonates with today’s conflicts and challenges.
What to expect from the conference?
The talk will go beyond a mere biographical overview, offering a critical analysis of how Hernández’s themes—injustice, war, love, and nature—engage with current issues like migration crises, inequality, and the climate emergency. According to the organisers, special attention will be given to his literary archive, recently digitised by the Fundación Miguel Hernández, and how his poetic voice can inspire new generations of writers and readers.
Admission is free and does not require prior registration, though the Aula Magna’s capacity is limited. The event is part of La Nau’s autumn cultural programme, which this year dedicates several spaces to historical memory and literary creation.
