Sala Russafa presents El verano en que mi madre tuvo los ojos verdes, a theatrical adaptation of Tatiana Ťĭbula’s novel that explores pain, memory, and healing through art. The play, running from 25 to 27 September 2026, immerses the audience in the creative process of Aleksi, a successful painter who, amid a personal crisis, decides to open his studio to the public. What begins as a performance transforms into an intimate journey into the past: the summer his mother fell ill and they both learned to forgive each other.

The play: art as catharsis
Directed by the Valencian company La Intemerata, the piece blends theatre and visual arts to tell a story of reconciliation. Aleksi, played by actor Pau Roca, uses painting as a means to reconstruct and confront his relationship with his mother, turning the stage into a living canvas. The minimalist and symbolic scenography reinforces the idea that art can be an act of redemption.
While Ťĭbula’s original novel—published in 2017 and translated into several languages—addresses themes like mental health and loss, the theatrical adaptation focuses on the mother-son relationship, using visual language to convey emotions that words cannot always express. The estimated runtime is 75 minutes, with no intermission.
