Presentation of an Essay on Carl Schmitt
On 10 September 2026, La Repartidora will host the presentation of «Carl Schmitt: Clarity and Blindness», the book by José Luis López Lizaga published by Alianza Editorial. The event, free and open to all without registration, will analyse the figure of one of the most influential—and controversial—political theorists of the 20th century.
The Book and the Debate
Carl Schmitt: Clarity and Blindness (2026) is a critical study that examines Schmitt’s work from a contemporary perspective. With 416 pages and priced at €14.90, the book explores his intellectual legacy, shaped by concepts such as sovereignty, the state of exception, and political decision-making, but also by his collaboration with the Nazi regime. The essay seeks to answer a key question: how should we read a thinker who, despite his theoretical brilliance, embodied some of the worst contradictions of the 20th century?
Alongside the author, Luis Arenas and César Ortega Esquembre will participate in the presentation, discussing the book’s content and its relevance in today’s political context. The event will begin at 18:30.
About Carl Schmitt
Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) was a German jurist and philosopher whose work has influenced law, political science, and state theory. His ideas on sovereignty—such as his famous definition that «sovereign is he who decides on the state of exception»—remain widely studied, but his affiliation with Nazism made him a controversial figure. This book does not shy away from that ambivalence; instead, it explores it to understand his relevance (or lack thereof) in contemporary debate.
If you’re interested in political thought, legal philosophy, or discussions on democracy and power, this event offers an opportunity to delve into one of the most complex figures of the last century.
