Avant-garde jazz in tribute to Coltrane
Jimmy Glass Jazz Bar kicks off its Autumn Cycle 2026 with an exceptional concert: the duo formed by saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and drummer Chad Taylor brings their project Radiant Imprints to Valencia. Released in 2021, this work celebrates the centenary of John Coltrane’s birth through a repertoire that evokes the duo recordings the saxophonist made with drummer Rashied Ali in the 1960s.
The concert takes place on 21 September at 20:30 and will last approximately 90 minutes, with no interval. Lewis and Taylor, known for their innovative approach to contemporary jazz, will perform both original compositions and free interpretations of Coltrane’s pieces, such as Dear Lord and Ogunde.
Artistic context
James Brandon Lewis, from Buffalo (USA), has been described by The New York Times as one of the most original saxophonists of his generation. His collaboration with Chad Taylor—a drummer with a career that includes work with Marc Ribot, Mary Halvorson, and Nicole Mitchell—dates back to 2018, when they released their first album together, Radiance. Radiant Imprints, their second project, delves deeper into the connection between Coltrane’s legacy and free improvisation.
The duo has performed at venues like BIMHUIS in Amsterdam, the Brussels Jazz Festival, and Winter Jazzfest in New York, always in an intimate format that enhances the interaction between their instruments. In Valencia, the concert is part of Jimmy Glass’s regular programming, a space specialising in avant-garde jazz and bold proposals.
