A Welsh choir in Valencia
The Ateneo Mercantil de Valencia will host a free concert by the Welsh choir Cantorion Pentalar on 20 September 2026. Founded in 2024 by its musical director, Geraint Williams, the ensemble hails from South Wales and has gained recognition after winning first prize at the National Eisteddfod choral competition, one of the most prestigious events in Welsh choral music. Their performance in Valencia offers a chance to discover a musical tradition deeply rooted in Welsh culture: choral singing.
The programme: From opera to traditional music
The concert’s repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Bruckner, Tchaikovsky, Handel, Bizet, Dvořák, and Puccini, alongside a selection of traditional and sacred Welsh music. Highlights include:
- Suo Gân and Adre’n Ôl, traditional Welsh songs.
- Opera arias such as Lascia ch’io pianga (Handel), O mio babbino caro (Puccini), and the Habanera from Carmen (Bizet).
The choir will feature soprano Adele O’Neill and baritone Andrew Jerram, both closely linked to Welsh music and culture. On piano, Meryn Williams will accompany the ensemble, as is customary in their performances.
